Lovely Chamois, Quadrupeds, Allen & Ginter, Rectangular Pillow

Regular price $29.00 Sale

This lovely chamois is so pretty I've put her on both sides of this pillow. She has a somewhat checkered history, having been one of 50 cards in the Quadrupeds series given as a premium for Allen & Ginter cigarettes in the year 1890. Packed one to each box of 10 cigs. But isn’t she gorgeous?

The pillow measures 20 x 12 inches. The fabric is pre-shrunk polyester — soft and durable, with a moisture-resistant coating. The pillowcase is machine washable, with a concealed zipper. The resilient polyester filling insert retains its shape, and can be washed by hand. Made in USA.

I don’t know the name of the artist of this masterpiece, someone who counted themselves lucky to be working as an artist, no doubt.

Chamois are tiny goat-antelopes only about 28 to 31 inches tall. They mostly live in the Pyrenees, so it’s not too surprising that avalanches are one of the main ways they meet their makers.

The original lithograph of this chamois lives in the Jefferson R. Burdick Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
