Rustic Wood Platform Bed – A homemade bed, Tosca adds a rustic touch to a bedroom. An added bonus – materials are cheap and usually bound for the dumpster. Used wooden pallets are available from construction sites but ask first. You can also buy in the construction of pallet suppliers and distributors. Often, the pallets are used once before being discarded, so making a homemade paddle bed is a rustic design statement that is environmentally conscious.
Measure the space. Take note of the length and width of the area where you want to put your bed. Also take note of the height taking windows, electrical outlets, and bedside tables into consideration. Prepare the area where the bed will be installed. This will be the workspace. If you make the bed in another room, you may not be able to get it through the bedroom door when finished. The materials can be bulky and they could be using a saw to cut the size of the pallet.
Stack the wooden pallets. Placing two pallets side by side will accommodate a double-sized mattress. Another pair of pallets of the same size placed next to those that will fit a California king-size mattress. Stack two or more on top of a platform of the upper bed. Reinforce pallets stacked with wooden screws so they do not slip when getting in and out of bed. Sand rough spots on the exposed edges of the pallets. It is not necessary for the areas of sand that will be covered by a mattress. Place the mattress on top of the rustic pallet platform.
