This poster, Despotic Riches Inure, is a print of a page in the 1874 book Specimens of Chromatic Wood Type, Borders, Etc. Available in 16 x 20 and 8 x 10 inches.

The book was created by the William H. Page & Co. as an aid for its agents when selling chromatic wood type. According to the book's preface, "It has taken years of time to prepare and perfect it. The designs with two or three exceptions are entirely original with us."

This version is printed in USA on museum-quality, archival, acid-free matte paper — 10.3 mil, 192 grams per square inch — with an opacity of 94% and ISO brightness of 104%.

Chromatic Wood Type

The idea with chromatic type is that each letter (or other element) was made so as to print in more than one color. For instance, there would be 2 pieces of type for the letter “A”, and having run a piece of paper through the press twice, you could end up with a letter “A” that was red on top, blue on the bottom, and purple where the colors overlapped.

It was a challenge to line things up, which makes the art in this book even more masterful. The book contains 100 plates considered the height of the art of chromatic wood type. They are precisely printed in up to 7 colors each, sometimes using metallic inks.

No one seems to know who decided which words William H. Page & Co. showcased in the book, or why.
