Autumn Tree in Stirred Air (Winter Tree), Egon Schiele, Square Pillow

Autumn Tree in Stirred Air (Winter Tree), Egon Schiele, Square Pillow

Regular price $28.00 Sale

This 18 x 18 inch pillow is cut from fabric custom-printed with Autumn Tree in Stirred Air (Winter Tree), a 1912 painting by Austrian Egon Schiele.

The design is printed onto special paper, and then transferred onto the fabric using heat and pressure. This sublimation process creates a soft, breathable, vibrantly colored material – the pattern becomes part of the fabric, it doesn’t just sit on top of it.

The fabric is pre-shrunk polyester — soft and durable. The pillowcase is machine washable, with a concealed zipper. The resilient polyester filling insert retains its shape, and can be washed by hand. Made in USA.

Egon Schiele

With its mild theme, Autumn Tree in Stirred Air (Winter Tree) is hardly representative of most of Egon Schiele’s work — which is daring, sexually explicit, and has often been considered pornographic. A judge burned one work of art in a candle flame, while finding Schiele guilty of displaying his erotic pictures in a place where children (his 12-year-old crush) could see them — good for about a month in jail. Schiele had a liking for young teenage girls that tended to cause him trouble throughout his short life (1890-1919).

As reflected in his tortured portraits and self-portraits, Schiele’s life had a lot of angst and trouble, which he was clearly asking for. His story is told in the 1980 German movie, Excess and Punishment (aka Egon Schiele – Exzess und Bestrafung). Spoiler: the flu got him.
