Little Book of Love

Around the year 1500, Pierre Sala presented the Little Book of Love (Petit Livre d’Amour) to his mistress and future wife, Marguerite Bullioud. Sala, who was a valet de chambre for King Louis XII of France, wrote the prose and the poems, and hired an artist to do the pictures. The artist was an anonymous manuscript illuminator known as “Master of the Chronique Scandaleuse” after his most famous work, and sometimes known as Maître de Morgan or Maître de Jean de Bilhères.

You can see all the book’s pages in the British Museum’s Illuminated Manuscript Collection.
