Paul-Albert Besnard

Paul-Albert Besnard was one of those rare fortunate artists: He was born in Paris, he died in Paris, and in between he was a success at everything he touched. He was a celebrated artist in watercolor, oil, pastel, etchings. He was awarded prestigious positions and commissions. He painted large frescos at the Sorbonne and around Paris, and the ceiling of the Comédie-Française.

His work was influenced by his travels to India, Morocco, Algeria, Italy, and Spain, and by his attraction to Japanese prints.

Much of his best work is portraits of women, including the lovely series of prints, La Femme, sympathetic depictions of the experience of being a woman.
